So why doesn’t your stomach digest itself?

Because the stomach has several protective mechanisms. Its lining is covered by a thick layer of mucus and bicarbonate that helps shield its cells from the acid and digestive enzymes.

The stomach also constantly replaces damaged cells.

But your blood is never actually blue.

Blood containing oxygen is bright red, while blood with less oxygen is darker red.

The colour you see through your skin is influenced by the way light penetrates and scatters through skin and tissue.

So the blue-looking veins underneath your skin aren’t carrying blue blood.

37. Your body can temporarily shut down non-essential functions

When you’re in severe danger, your body prioritises survival.

Blood flow, hormones, heart rate and breathing can all be altered depending on the situation.

During extreme stress, digestion may become less important while systems involved in immediate physical action receive greater priority.
